Ask someone about anything in their home, purse, or backpack, and you’ll be surprised by what they might tell you. When people engage and talk about objects, they tell stories they only sometimes have the chance to communicate. With this in mind, I initiated a conversation with a group of students from Hofstra, exploring the role objects play in their daily practices and how they could be central to meaning-making. Each student shared an object along with the significances these often ordinary items hold. The personal came out: a broken calculator standing in for the memory of those cheating times, a coral skeleton becoming a tool to overcome unbearable stress, a figurine serving as reminder of a spiritual mantra. The value of these objects goes beyond the monetary; they have a weight needed to hold and give meaning to our existence.
